When Pastor Lionel Toop marries former actress Penelope he takes her back to live in his previously quiet, homely village. This turns Miss Skillen, his frumpy resident church assistant, a little loopy after having nursed an obsession for the unobservant preacher over many years. When Penelope recognises a passing British soldier from a nearby POW camp as a former acting associate, the mayhem really starts. They spend an enjoyable evening out until his uniform inexplicably disappears. A POW, known in the script as "The Man", escapes from the camp terrorising the locals. To top it off, Penelope's uncle, the Bishop of Lax, turns up in the town and joins several others who have donned clerical garb for one reason or another. Meanwhile, Ida, the mindless maid to the Toop family, glazes over at the sight of he burly serviceman.
